The Social Care Institute for Excellence has published a research report evaluating a therapeutic approach to social work in residential child care settings which was implemented in Northern Ireland. Findings include: young people noticed an improved atmosphere; and staff said it enhanced practice, particularly their relationships with young people.

Children and Young People Now report that the number of young people under 18 in custody has fallen to 1804 in March 2012, the lowest level since the Youth Justice Board began collecting records.

Family Action has published a report calling for more early intervention support for mothers at risk of depression both before and after the birth of their baby. It identifies a gap in services, and suggests that financial pressures and lack of services may have a negative effect on mothers' mental health and their ability to bond with their babies, subsequently impacting upon children's life chances.
