Leading campaigner for the protection of child athletes awarded an OBE
10 January 2012
Professor Celia Brackenridge, a pioneering campaigner and researcher into gender equality and child abuse in sport, has received an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.
John Grounds, NSPCC Director, said "The NSPCC is delighted to hear that Celia Brackenridge has been awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours list. Celia has been a tireless and passionate advocate for child protection in sport. Celia’s pioneering vision and dedicated campaigning played a vital role in ensuring the launch of NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit over 10 years ago.
Celia continues to be a keen supporter and advocate for the work of the CPSU and its partners. We wish her all the very best for the future, in particular in her role as coordinator of the ICSEMIS conference which precedes the Olympics and Paralympics in July this year. The conference has the strongest focus on athlete welfare that we have ever seen. This reflects the recognition of the groundbreaking work that Celia, the CPSU and others have done to develop a more athlete-centred approach by sports organizations in the UK and internationally."
