Meet the CPSU team
Anne Tiivas
CPSU Director
Anne is responsible for managing the Unit’s staff in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. She also manages relationships with the respective Sports Councils, with our key partners in sport, and with the wider safeguarding world.
Anne maintains contact with a range of sports-related trusts and organisations, government departments, the Criminal Records Bureau and the Independent Safeguarding Authority. She is also working with the International Olympic Committee to develop international resources to address sexual harassment and abuse of athletes.
Anne is a trained social worker and has been with the CPSU since 2001.
Nick Slinn
Senior Consultant England
Nick’s area of responsibility is supporting county sport partnerships in developing their safeguarding work.
He is a qualified social worker and has been with the CPSU since 2002. His career with the NSPCC started in 1990, specialising in work with sexual offenders and child victims of abuse in a frontline service.
Jude Toasland
Senior Consultant England Jude joined the CPSU in 2009. She has worked for the NSPCC since 2000 both in Training and Consultancy and in managing direct services for children and young people. Jude is a qualified social worker.
Jude's work involves providing support to national sport governing bodies, supporting them in their safeguarding work. This role also involves consultation, training and liaision with sports organisations, government departments and other sports bodies.
She leads on the area of training and is a member of the Call to Action Skills and Knowledge group.
Sally Proudlove
Senior Consultant England
Sally’s work involves exploring how the Unit can better support designated persons at different levels throughout sports organisations.
She provides support to national sport governing bodies, supporting them to achieve their child protection and safeguarding policies and procedures.
Sally joined the CPSU in 2009 with experience of frontline social work and safeguarding training.
Lisa Charles
Senior Consultant England
Lisa joined the CPSU in May 2011. Lisa's role involves providing support to the national sport governing bodies in their safeguarding work, supporting them to achieve the Advanced Standards for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport and to implement the Framework to maintain and embed those standards. Her role also involves consultation, training and liasion with sports organisations.
Within the CPSU team Lisa will be taking the lead on our work around involving children and young people in safeguarding through sport.
Lisa has ten years experience in sports development , having worked for an active sports partnership and a county sports partnership. Since 2009 Lisa has worked in a training role and a development role for a local safeguarding children board, where she currently still works.
Paul Stephenson
Senior Consultant Northern Ireland
Paul’s primary role is with sports governing bodies to promote good practice in their work with children and young people ensuring they are able to work to agreed standards set for the sports sector in Northern Ireland. He advises a number of local councils on their safeguarding policies, trains staff on implementing these, and responds to direct enquiries from clubs or parents.
He is also secretary of the Northern Ireland branch of the National Organisation for Treatment of Offenders (NOTA) .
Prior to joining the NSPCC Paul managed a Probation-funded project working with those involved in the criminal justice system. A number of his previous clients were sex offenders with coaching awards and this is how he became interested in this area of work. Paul has also worked directly with young people in the care system who have experienced different forms of abuse.
Karen Workman
Senior Consultant Wales
Karen works closely with Sport Wales to provide sporting organisations and other partners with advice and support on safeguarding practices, and to develop sport-specific child protection information and training materials. She is also a sports coach UK safeguarding tutor and assessor.
Prior to joining the CPSU in April 2008 Karen worked as a senior social work practitioner and manager in the statutory and voluntary sectors in the South Wales valleys.
Laura Whapham
Sport Development Officer Wales
Laura works closely with Sport Wales to support the National Governing Bodies in Wales with their child protection and safeguarding policies and procedures. Laura's role also supports many of the sports through the Safeguarding Standards Framework to enable sports to maintain and embed safeguards. Within the CPSU team Laura will be taking the lead on our work around deaf and disabled children and young people in sport.
Prior to joining the team Laura worked predominantly in the voluntary social care sector with a range of young people with complex needs, including children with disabilities, young carers and looked after children. Laura is also a keen sportswoman and has a degree in sport and physical education.
Carole Billington-Wood
Golf Development Officer
Carole’s primary role is to coordinate the implementation of 'Children in Golf', which involves providing information, advice, training and support to golf governing bodies to introduce practices to safeguard the welfare of children and young people.
A keen sportswoman, she has taught PE, been a coach educator and practitioner with sixteen year's experience of sports development. Prior to joining the Unit in 2005 she was director of development with British Triathlon.
Safeguarding Information Officer
Lian Jackson and Hannah Mansell job share the role of Safeguarding Information Officer for the CPSU. They are both responsible for making safeguarding information widely accessible through our website and answering enquiries that come into the unit. They also coordinate the development of our quarterly newsletter, Relay. They are both responsible for digital development and dissemination of information and guidance to the sports sector.
Lian Jackson
Lian leads on the planning for the CPSU 10 year anniversary event and sits on the Call to Action Awareness and Communications group. She joined the team in August 2010 and previously worked for the NSPCC's Safe Network team.
Hannah Mansell
Hannah joined the CPSU in March 2007 initially as an administrator. In April 2009 she took on the role of Safeguarding Information Officer. Hannah leads on the area of involving children and young people.
Julyn Walker
Support Service Co-ordinator
Julyn is responsible for dealing with financial procedures within the CPSU. She assists internal departments and external organisations with enquiries and also contributes to inducting, developing and supporting team members. She joined the CPSU in 2004.
Anna Brownlow
Administrator
Anna joined the Child Protection in Sport Unit in October 2010 and provides full time administrative support for the team. Anna’s primary role is to support the unit with general administrative duties and enquiries.
She also leads on the coordination of CPSU standards assessment and panel meetings, Lead officer support forums and CPSU Time to Listen training.
Sandy Dhesi
Administrator
Sandy provides part-time administrative support for the team as well as important support for the Unit's work with Children in Golf, and coordinates CPSU Time to Listen training. Before joining the team in October 2010, Sandy was a teaching assistant and development officer for another charity.
Nazia Jussab
Administrator
Nazia joined the Child Protection in Sport Unit in December 2010 and provides part-time administrative support for the team. Nazia’s primary role is to help the Unit with general administrative duties and enquiries.
