Every sports organisation should designate a person or persons with lead responsibility for promoting the welfare of children within the sport and dealing with any concerns about the protection of children at national governing body (NGB) level.
The contact details for this person and a description of their role and responsibilities should be included within the child protection policy for each sport. In larger sporting organisations there is a need to ensure that there are people with designated responsibility at different levels within the organisation in addition to the lead officer role, at regional, county and club level for example.
Every club linking with schools should have a designated person for child protection and these are usually referred to as Club Welfare Officers. This is a requirement of Clubmark accreditation which is the accepted minimum set of standards for clubs linking with schools.
Club Welfare Officers ensure that the club promotes and fulfils its responsibilities for child welfare. They should take a key role in ensuring that child protection issues are addressed and discussed in schools when entering into any agreement to deliver sporting activities for pupils.
