The CPSU and SportNI believe that all sports governing bodies and clubs have a duty to promote a positive experience and safeguard children from abuse or poor practice. They also have a role in recognising and responding to concerns that a child may be being harmed within another setting.
The Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) in Northern Ireland was established in 2001 to work with sports bodies so that they are able to fulfil their duty of care and protect children from harm.
In 2011, we celebrate our 10th anniversary by calling for a Challenge for Change in Sports Clubs, encouraging all sports clubs to work towards achieving a Clubmark accreditation to embed safeguarding procedures at a grassroots level.
The CPSU Northern Ireland believe that by encouraging all clubs to implement their governing body guidelines, everyone in sport will benefit: children, parents/guardians and leaders. Search for a sports governing body and contact them for further information on your sports guidelines.
Sport Northern Ireland have produced general guidance for the sports sector in the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children’s Sport. For information, the CPSU has created a briefing on
