Awareness-raising training for the sports sector

An introduction to safeguarding in sport

For anyone working with minimal (and supervised) contact with children and young people in a sports organisation. It is also a precursor to basic and specialist courses.

Most child protection awareness training is not sport-specific.  However, the NSPCC's Child Protection in Sport Unit has worked with EduCare to develop such a course specifically for the sport and leisure sector:

NSPCC Child Protection Awareness in Sport and Active Leisure is an online learning programme, which is also available in hard copy.  It can be purchased independently or as part of EduCare for Sport.

National governing bodies of sport may have their own training for this level and there are also a number of local authority courses.

For more information on these training opportunities contact your national sports governing body or county sports partnership to see if there are any courses available in your area.

Key issues to bear in mind when considering a course

  • Is the course clear about its learning objectives/what you will achieve by doing the training?
  • Does the organisation delivering the course have recognised expertisein the field of safeguarding?
  • Is there an understanding of the sports sector by the organisation delivering the course?
  • Can commisioning organisations receive feedback from the organisation about their staff and volunteers' attendance on the course?
