Basic safeguarding training in sport

For coaches, volunteers and designated safeguarding officers

Key audience

These basic courses or workshops are appropriate for those working in sport with regular responsibility for children and young people.

For those with lead or deputising roles in safeguarding and/or responsibility for recruitment, see specialist safeguarding training.

Courses and workshops

General safeguarding (not sports-specific):

Safeguarding children in sports training by Sports Coach UK / National Governing Bodies:

Northern Ireland

Choosing the right course

All paid or unpaid coaches, other volunteers who work with children and young people, and those with designated safeguarding roles, such as Club Welfare Officers, should attend at least one recognised safeguarding workshop or course. The appropriate one will depend on the person's age, role and level of responsibility.

When deciding on the appropriate training for you, your staff or volunteers, we would advise that you also consider:

  • A direct delivery or face-to-face course or workshop will enable the complexities of safeguarding issues related to the specific role(s) to be addressed
  • The minimum time required to adequately cover all the issues effectively is typically three hours.
  • Training that has been accredited by the LSCB or NHS has the advantage of being quality assured.

What you should bear in mind when choosing a specific course or workshop:

  • Is the course clear about its learning objectives and what you will achieve by doing the training?
  • Does the organisation delivering the course have recognised expertise in the field of safeguarding?
  • Is there an understanding of the sport sector by the organisation delivering the course?
  • Can commissioning organisations receive feedback from the organisation about their staff and volunteers’ attendance on the course?

Safeguarding and Protecting Children (SPC)

This is a workshop delivered by sports coach UK tutors.

A sport-specific version is also taught under license by a number of sports national governing bodies (NGBs).

The sports coach UK versions are likely to be slightly shorter than the sport-specific workshops delivered by NGBs.

Safeguarding and Protection Children 2: Reflecting on Practice (SPC2)

This workshop was developed at the beginning of 2010 and is delivered to coaches (UKCC level 2). SPC2 differs from its predecessor in that it builds on the practical experience of coaching children and young people. Participants are given the opportunity to reflect on as well as learn from their own and other coaches’ experiences.

Course requirements
Coaches who attend SPC2 must have completed the SPC workshop a minimum of one year ago and be prepared to reflect upon their safeguarding practice as a coach.

For further information, call 0113 274 4802, email bsc@sportscoachuk.org, or visit www.sportscoachuk.org.

Safeguarding and Protecting Children (for 16 - 18-year-olds)

This workshop establishes the basic knowledge for an assistant coach in safeguarding and protecting children. It is intended primarily for UKCC level 1 assistant coaches, but can be adapted for other groups (young leaders, young officials, sport students).

The core of the course is taken from the SPC workshop for UKCC level 2 coaches, but the activities are tailored to 16 -18-year-old participants. The workshop establishes the basic knowledge for an assistant coach in safeguarding and protecting children.

Young people aged 16 to 18 who attend this workshop will be considered as young people in need of safeguarding as well as people in positions of responsibility who can contribute to safeguarding other children.

Roll-out for these workshops started in mid-2010.

For further information, call 0113 274 4802, email bsc@sportscoachuk.org , or visit www.sportscoachuk.org.

Local Safeguarding Children Boards Training

This training includes:
  • Direct delivery 3 hour LSCB basic awareness training
  • Direct delivery 3 hour health, education or statutory sector basic awareness training
