Help with searching the NSPCC Library catalogue
Simple search
The search form
You can enter data in any field. After you've clicked on the Search button, the search engine will start a search based on the information you have entered in the form. The order in which you fill in the fields is not important.
Truncation is automatic, i.e. the search assumes that any string of characters is allowed after the ones you've already entered. This means that the search will include any word starting with the characters you've entered. For example: Entering psych in the title field will retrieve every record that has a word starting with 'psych ' (such as 'psychiatry', 'psychology') in the title.
The search routine is case insensitive, so it doesn't matter whether you include capitals or not.
Firstly select which catalogue you want to search in, this will depend on the type of material you are looking for. You can search across all material types by selecting Full Catalogue or you can restrict your search to the Articles, Audio Visual Material, Books or Serials catalogues.
Author
In this field you can enter the name of the author you want to find (e.g. 'Creigh' or 'Creighton' or 'Creighton, S').
If you are unsure or wish to browse the author list enter the first letter(s) of the name you wish to search on and click on either Author list for named individuals, e.g. 'Smith', or Corporate authors for organisations, e.g. 'Department'. Clicking on an author will retrieve all the records on the catalogue containing that author's name.
Title
In this field you can enter words from the title. When you enter more than one word, all records will be retrieved that have those words (in no particular order) in the title.
Publisher
Here you can enter the name of the publisher that you are looking for.
Year published
Here you can enter the year of publication, e.g. '2000' or '200'.
ISBN
In this field you can enter the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) of the book you are looking for.
Subject term
Here you can enter subject headings from our thesaurus. An example from our database is 'manage', which will find 'management', and also 'managers'.
If you are unsure of the term you wish to search on or wish to browse the thesaurus, enter the first letter(s) of the term you wish to search on, e.g. 'family', and click on Subject list. Clicking on a term will retrieve all the records on the catalogue that have been indexed using that term. You can also browse the thesaurus and view related terms.
Free text
In this field you can enter words which might be contained in the title or abstract of a record. All records will be retrieved that have those words in those fields. If there is not a subject heading for the concept you are looking for, try searching this free text field.
Journal title
In this field you can enter the journal title eg. Child Abuse Review. This will retrieve articles we have indexed from that journal.
Presentation
With this option you can select from three types of presentation:
- short: Presentation where you can mark records to display brief presentations together
- full: Presentation where you can mark records to display detailed presentations together
- Harvard: Short presentation where you can mark records to display references together in Harvard style. This is suitable for bibliographic referencing.
When any presentation is selected, if your search only finds one record, that will be displayed in full.
