How do you cope with serious case reviews?

NSPCC news for local authorities

Child reading in libraryCarrying out change based on serious case review (SCR) recommendations is always challenging. In light of the changes to the process recommended by the Munro Review, local authorities may need extra support.

The NSPCC provides independent chairs and overview report authors for SCRs, contributes expert, research-informed opinions to reviews and can help you to make changes based on SCR recommendations. We also provide training courses on key learning from SCRs, bespoke SCR courses and courses on key elements linked to many SCRs.

Sharing the latest thinking

The Munro Review, published earlier this year, stated: “There should be a stronger focus on understanding the underlying issues that made professionals behave the way they did…The current system is too focused on what happened, not why.”

It reinforced the key role of SCRs, but also proposed a more systemic approach more commonly used in sectors such as aviation and healthcare.

In response, we’re working to ensure that staff who undertake SCR activities on your behalf receive training in systemic approaches, which means we can share the latest thinking when we work with you. In addition, we’re investigating new ways that learning from SCRs and other sources can be embedded into multi-agency working. We recently ran a very successful innovations day looking at this issue with partners from a variety of sectors and will be reporting on this in more detail soon.

We’ve also been developing a competency framework for all staff who undertake SCR work and provided training for them. We also provide them with ongoing support and quality assurance to ensure that any LSCB or other agency that commissions us to do this work for them will feel confident in their choice.
