Baroness Joan Walmsley (Liberal Democrats)

NSPCC Parliamentary Ambassador

Baroness Joan Walmsley Baroness Joan Walmsley is a very active supporter of the NSPCC and one of the most prolific and passionate speakers on children's issues in the House of Lords.

Joan regularly chairs NSPCC events both in Parliament and elsewhere and has been particularly active on NSPCC campaigns on the Children's Commissioner for England and removing the defence of reasonable chastisement. Working with another NSPCC Ambassador, Paul Burstow MP, Joan was instrumental in getting the Liberal Democrats to adopt reform of the law on physical punishment as party policy in 2003. Joan also led a cross-party debate in the House of Lords on the vetting of those unsuitable to work with children in early 2004.

Joan is also vice-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Children.

In July 2004 the NSPCC nominated Joan for our Epolitix Charity Children's Champion.
