Room for improvement

A manifesto for children

Front cover of Room for improvementIn February 2005 the NSPCC, Barnardo's, Children's Society, NCH and Save the Children published a manifesto which aims to ensure that the needs and rights of the most vulnerable children and young people in our society are given a higher political priority in this Parliament.

The Manifesto is based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The UNCRC spells out the basic human rights for children everywhere and was ratified by the UK Government in 1991. However, the UN has since reported that the UK is still violating many of the rights it signed up to. Whilst recognising significant improvements that have been made in recent years, the Manifesto highlights where children's rights are being violated and makes specific recommendations to address this. The five charities and the 55 further organisations who have endorsed this Manifesto are calling upon political parties to make children's issues a priority in the next Parliament.
