Child neglect (PDF, 172KB) is a short research briefing and literature review looking at the definition, causes and effects of neglect.

Neglect has been described as the "most serious type of child maltreatment and the least understood" (Crittenden, 1999). It is the most common reason for inclusion on the child protection register in the UK.

Our research briefing concludes that although neglect is pervasive, it is underreported due to the fact it is so complex and hard to define. It often co-exists with other forms of child maltreatment, and boundaries between abuse and neglect can become blurred. The needs of neglectful families are varied and complex, which calls for a joined-up interagency approach. Effective interventions in child neglect cases are crucial for safeguarding children.
