About NSPCC Procedures and Core Standards

Our best practice handbook for NSPCC practitioners and managers providing services for children and young people

NSPCC Procedures and Core Standards (PCS) were developed for use within the NSPCC Services for Children and Young People (SCYP) function.

We have worked hard to develop our Procedures and Core Standards within a process which is responsive to the constant demand for change and development, both within and external to the organisation.

Our Procedures and Core Standards identify the standards to which services to children and young people will be delivered and are incorporated into staff supervision and performance development processes. They are mandatory for the NSPCC Services for Children and Young People (SCYP) function and the NSPCC Inspection Unit uses them as a basis for its work with SCYP. In the interests of openness and good practice, our Procedures and Core Standards are made available to partner agencies and other interested parties through this website.

Our Procedures and Core Standards are reviewed and updated at six monthly intervals in response to:

  • changes in legislation and guidance
  • recommendations from Inquiries
  • internal/external inspection findings/recommendations
  • organisational changes
  • learning from practice
  • local monitoring and audits.

All activity relating to Procedures and Core Standards is co-ordinated by a national group chaired by an NSPCC Divisional Director with a membership of senior managers and office managers. Final approval is given by the SCYP functional management team, chaired by the Director.
