CHIPs Update

The NSPCC has recently announced its Strategy 2009-2016. Under the new strategy, we have set ourselves the goal of ensuring that every primary school-aged child in the UK and the Channel Islands understands abuse in all its forms, including bullying, and is able to recognise the signs of abuse.

We also want to make sure children know how to protect themselves and are aware of the help available to them, including support from ChildLine.

CHIPs are committed to delivering current services within most existing schools until Christmas 2010. This will give schools and us nearly 12 months in which to prepare for the change and to identify any alternative providers who might take on parts of our work.

In parallel, we will spend this year developing our new service model, including the design, testing and evaluation of four pilots to begin during the summer term. We intend to begin to roll-out the new service to primary schools from January 2011.

At the same time, a new schools service for primary school-aged children is being developed. To deliver a new service across the UK, we must refocus our existing resources.

It is for this reason that we have decided to withdraw our existing peer support and other services (e.g. anti-bullying workshops etc), which CHIPs currently offer within primary, secondary schools and other youth settings.

We do so with a heavy heart, fully appreciating the strong relationship we have with individual schools and the real difference we are making to the lives of the children we support.

During this period of change, CHIPs staff will continue to consider bookings for Peer Support and anti-bullying work on an individual basis.

If you've any questions about the CHIPS programme, please call Lauren Shane, CHIPs Programme Support Officer on 020 7650 3234 or email chips@nspcc.org.uk
