1. What is Improving Safeguarding in Schools (ISIS )?

This online self-assessment and development resource from NSPCC will help you to understand your school's strengths in safeguarding; identify areas for improvement and plan accordingly.

The aim of ISIS is to enable schools to enhance the quality of their safeguarding policy and practice and meet the statutory requirements to safeguard and promote wellbeing.

2. Who can use ISIS?

ISIS has been designed for those providing education in England for pupils aged 5-18 years and this includes primary and secondary schools, maintained and independent schools, short stay schools, academies and special schools.

3. What are the benefits of using ISIS?

Using the resource can bring many benefits to your schools including:

  • preparing for the safeguarding aspects of inspections

  • gathering evidence for elements of the National Healthy Schools Standards

  • enhancing the skills and confidence of staff and governors in respect of their safeguarding responsibilities

  • reassuring parents and carers that their school is taking significant steps to keep children safe

  • involving pupils in developing safeguarding polices and practices.

Schools involved in the ISIS pilot found it helped them to reflect on their policies and practice, generate actions and encourage progression. They told us:

"It made me think very much about what we're doing in school and what we need to do".

"This does more than just measuring; it gives you the next step. You know that is what makes this so valuable".

4. What is in the ISIS resource?

The ISIS resource is web-based and self contained. It allows schools to self-assess against safeguarding standards, plan and then implement improvements by drawing on a variety of useful resources within the site. In addition, consultancy support and/or training can be purchased from NSPCC Child Protection Consultancy and Training services if required. To find more information out about these services please email: isis@nspcc.org.uk.

Because safeguarding in schools covers a broad range of issues these have been grouped together within ISIS into six quality areas:

  • promoting emotional health and well being
  • pupil behaviour
  • child protection
  • safety and security
  • governance
  • staff.

Each quality area has a number of defined standards with indicators and identified key outcomes that can be achieved by completing the quality area. Schools will need to make a judgment about the extent to which they meet each indicator and plan how to make improvements if necessary. Result tables and action planning templates are included. To assist with the improvement process ISIS also includes:

  • A  resource bank with guidance notes. This has links to relevant legislation, guidance, websites and practice examples.

  • Outcome measurement questionnaires for pupils, parents/carers and staff. These enable schools to gather feedback and measure how well they are achieving the outcomes before and after using ISIS.

  • Ideas to promote pupil participation in safeguarding and the quality improvement process. A range of exercises linked to specific standards so that your school can actively involve pupils in aspects of safeguarding development.

  • Legal and policy context for safeguarding is summarised.
