Improving Safeguarding in Schools (ISIS)

An overview of key features and benefits

The ISIS resource is an online self assessment and development resource that aims to enable schools to enhance the quality of their safeguarding policies and practices in order to meet their statutory requirement to safeguard and promote wellbeing.

Safeguarding covers a broad range of issues for schools and the resource has grouped these into six quality areas:

  • promoting emotional health and wellbeing
  • pupil behaviour
  • child protection
  • safety and security
  • governance
  • staff.

Each quality area has a number of defined standards with indicators and identified key outcomes that can be achieved by completing the quality area. Schools can self assess against these indicators to make a judgement and plan how to make improvements if necessary.

The resource supports schools to identify areas of strength by providing results tables to illustrate the assessment, whilst also supporting development by including action planning templates.

To assist with the improvement process ISIS also includes:

  • A resource bank with guidance notes.  This has links to relevant legislation, guidance, websites and practice examples.

  • Outcome measurement questionnaires for pupils, parents/ carers and staff.  These enable schools to gather feedback before and after the ISIS process to measure progress.

  • Ideas to promote pupil participation in safeguarding and the ISIS process. A range of activities are linked to specific standards so that schools can actively involve pupils in aspects of safeguarding development.

  • A legal and policy summary paper which provides the context for safeguarding in schools.

Using the ISIS resource can bring many benefits to schools:

  • preparing for the safeguarding aspects of inspection

  • gathering evidence for elements of the National Healthy Schools Standards

  • enhancing the skills and confidence of staff and governors in respect of their safeguarding responsibilities

  • reassuring parents and carers that their school is taking significant steps to keep children safe

  • involving pupils in developing safeguarding policies and practices.

The resource has been designed to involve all stakeholders in the process to develop a shared understanding of safeguarding.  It enables the whole school community to improve safeguarding practices together.
