Keeping children safe

NSPCC EduCare child protection awareness programme

Keeping children safe Written by the NSPCC, in conjunction with the Scouts, Girlguiding UK and St. John Ambulance, this programme has been designed for anyone working with children but is particularly relevant for organisations which already have an existing child protection policy in place.

It teaches employees/volunteers the need-to-know facts about child protection awareness and how to recognise and understand their role in safeguarding children. The delivery is flexible and the programme is available in both paper-based and online formats.

The programme comprises three short modules of key information. Each module has its own questionnaire to test understanding. Upon successful completion candidates are awarded a personalised NSPCC certificate. All participants will also receive individual feedback on their answers.

Module one - Understanding the basics

Learn about the four types of child abuse: physical, sexual, emotional and neglect. Understand how they can affect a child and how to manage your own feelings. Eliminate misunderstanding by learning about some of the common myths and facts surrounding child abuse.

Module two - What happens if?

Learn how to respond if a child confides in you and who you should turn to if you have concerns or suspicions. Refer to the guidelines on when and when not to discuss concerns with parents.

Module three - Principles of good practice

Protect yourself from false allegations by following the code of conduct and implementing principles of good practice. Learn how to implement new policies and procedures in your organisation and how to look for signs of those who may pose a threat to children when recruiting new staff.

A similar programme called Keeping children safe in sport is available for those who come into contact with children through sporting activities.
