Safer recruitment and selectionA new five-module NSPCC EduCare distance learning programme for anyone involved in the recruitment of staff and volunteers who work or come into contact with children and young people.

Safer recruitment and selection
 is available in both paper-based and online formats and is delivered in five short modules with questionnaires to test understanding. On successful completion participants are awarded a personalised NSPCC certificate.

Module 1 - Preparing to recruit

Discover:

  • what the key processes of safer recruitment are
  • how to define an individual’s job role
  • what to include in an application pack
  • how to plan your selection process.

Module 2 - Selecting the right people

Learn about:

  • the key elements of a safer selection process
  • shortlisting and interviews
  • choosing the right selection tools for your needs
  • effective assessment criteria.

Module 3 - Vetting checks 1

Understand:

  • vetting checks and those which are applicable during recruiting
  • the importance of references
  • how to check qualifications and identity documents
  • the issues of self-disclosure.

Module 4 – Vetting checks 2

Examine:

  • the legal situation
  • key points of criminal record checks
  • how to deal with applications from overseas candidates.

Module 5 – Maintaining vigilance

Look at:

  • creating a culture of safety
  • implementing induction and probationary periods
  • using training appraisals and codes of conduct
  • supervising, management and whistle-blowing.
