Value Based Interviewing (VBI)

Greater London National Training Awards Winner 2009

Greater London National Training Awards Winner 2009 A two-day training course for anyone responsible for conducting recruitment interviews with staff and/or volunteers wanting to work with children.

Course aim

This course is for those who have a responsibility for interviewing candidates wishing to work in a paid or voluntary capacity in organisations that provide services to children. The course is designed around the values, principles and standards of behaviour in individual organisations and gives participants advanced interviewing skills to explore individuals’ fit with their organisational culture.

Participants will learn how to assess aspects of a candidate's character which are difficult to test but essential for being effective in work in child focused organisations, such as values, attitudes, beliefs and behaviour. The course will demonstrate how to explore "gut feeling" and remain fair and non-discriminatory when asking probing questions.

Course objectives

This course will enable participants to:

  • explain how VBI helps to safeguard children through recruitment interviewing

  • explain the importance of organisational values and behaviours in creating and maintaining a culture of safeguarding

  • explore a model of suitability and behavioural effectiveness to work for a specific children’s organisation and how to test suitability in an interview

  • use active listening and a range of questioning and probing techniques to explore a candidate's answers in-depth

  • analyse evidence of candidates' values and behaviours against a value-based criteria

  • make an informed decision on a candidate's suitability to work in a specific children’s organisation
