Postgraduate certificate in therapeutic work with children

This award is offered as part of a collaborative arrangement with Nottingham University

Entry requirements

Candidates need to meet the university requirements for entry onto the PGC:

  • have a minimum of two years’ post-qualifying experience in promoting and safeguarding
    children's welfare
  • be currently engaged in therapeutic work with children / young people
  • produce evidence of academic ability at the point of entry
  • hold at least a second class honours degree or an approved professional qualification deemed by the Board of Faculty to be equivalent to a degree
  • meet the University's minimum requirements for English language.

Who should attend?

This advanced practitioner level programme has been designed to develop and enhance the skills of social work and non-social work qualified staff who:

  • work in a team with a remit for therapeutic recovery work with children
  • have sufficient practice experience to contribute to the discussions on current case material
  • want the opportunity to apply learning in the workplace.

Modules

Module 1: Understanding therapeutic work with children
Foundation course - 4 days
Play therapy - 2 days

Module 2: Effective therapeutic services for children with diverse needs and problems
Disabled and traumatised children - 2 days
Working with black children - 2 days

Module 3: Working with children - therapeutic models of change
Models and techniques - 2 days
Evaluation and review - 3 days

Course aims

  • to provide comprehensive and advanced learning development opportunities in therapeutic recovery work with children
  • to enable practitioners to share ideas, dilemmas and anxieties
  • to review and evaluate therapeutic interventions and develop strategies for effective practice
  • to reflect upon the importance of the therapeutic relationship and the need for self-awareness.

Dates and venue

The programme for March 2008 to March 2009 is fully subscribed.

Applications are invited for the programme due to run from April 2009 to March 2010.

The dates for 2009 will be posted on this page and on the  University of Nottingham website as soon as they are available.

Candidates are expected to attend a minimum of 80% of the taught programme. All direct teaching/training takes place at the NSPCC National Training Centre.
