Safer interviewing skills (for schools and children’s social care)

A one-day training course for managers and HR professionals responsible for recruiting staff and/or volunteers to work with children

Topics covered include: professional boundaries, emotional resilience, information sharing, challenging information and preparedness to take action to protect a child. The techniques utilised in the course are based on the NSPCC Value based interviewing model.

Course aim

To equip those who already have experience of recruitment and selection with more advanced interviewing skills to explore candidates’ safeguarding awareness behaviours, attitudes and motivations in relation to safeguarding children.

It is essential that participants have understanding and experience of interviewing and recruitment decision-making as this is not basic recruitment and selection training.

Course objectives

This course is designed to enable participants to:

  • interview candidates using safeguarding behaviours as the basis for questions

  • use active listening and a range of questioning and probing techniques to explore candidates’ answers in-depth

  • analyse evidence of candidates' behaviours and attitudes against a set criteria

  • make a more informed decision on candidates’ authenticity and suitability to work with children in a specific sector.

NB: This is a sector specific training, please read the venue information below for clarification.

The questions used within the training have been drawn up using sector specific safeguarding principles and codes of practice. This is to ensure that the participants attending from a variety of organisations in the same sector have a common understanding of issues, risks and needs in the sector. This also ensures the course content is relevant and appropriate for the type of work normally carried out in these settings.

Venues, dates and costs

The cost is £250 per person (including lunch and refreshments). This is a one day course.
