Training for trainers in child protection

An accredited programme for those responsible for the provision of child protection training

This programme has been developed to meet the needs of both full-time trainers and/or experienced practitioners for whom training is an integral part of their role.

Course aim

To enable workers who are engaged in child protection training to develop skills and knowledge in order to identify, plan, deliver and evaluate training.

Course objectives

This course is designed to enable participants to::

  • describe the training cycle and the importance of following it systematically so that issues relating to diversity practice are fully integrated in training

  • describe the different theories that influence the adult learning process and understand how the learning/training cycle operates at an individual and organisational level and what blocks it
  • describe the various means and methods for the identification of training needs

  • identify their own and others’ preferred styles of learning and understand how different learning styles influence the training process

  • demonstrate awareness of the emotional component for child protection training and identify strategies to manage this at various stages of the training event

  • identify and list performance objectives for a training event

  • describe a range of training methods and the suitability of each to reflect training principles

  • renew knowledge relating to group processes and apply this to the design of training events

  • identify the problems and benefits of co-working

  • demonstrate and share skills in relation to the presentation of material and the facilitation of discussions

  • identify the various methods and levels involved in the evaluation of the effectiveness of training.

Course structure

Training for trainers consists of a residential taught programme with a follow-up day and an assessment process route (see below). Alternatively, candidates who do not require accreditation may apply to attend the taught programme only.
