Keeping children safe

A toolkit for child protection

Front cover of Keeping children safe: a toolkit for child protection A joint initiative from the NSPCC, Save the Children, Oxfam, World Vision, Tearfund, Everychild, Plan, Terre des Hommes, People In Aid and the Consortium for Street Children.

The Keeping Children Safe toolkit marries the NSPCC's child protection training knowledge with international aid and development expertise to help relief and other agencies reach global standards in child protection. These standards require organisations to draft and implement child protection procedures to help their staff recognise and respond appropriately to signs of child abuse.

Keeping Children Safe includes a training pack and DVD featuring a series of exercises devised to help people overcome common cultural and political misconceptions about abuse. Structured activities help people to develop written policies and procedures relevant to their organisation.

The toolkit also contains additional workshop materials that are targeted at staff with particular roles, for example, management, emergency relief, child sponsorship and programming.

Keeping Children Safe will help agencies to:

  • recruit staff safely
  • deter, detect and respond to abuse
  • increase staff confidence through training to deal with child abuse concerns as they arise
  • keep children safe beyond agency boundaries
  • integrate child protection into all areas of the operation.

The toolkit includes:

  • Tool 1 – Keeping Children Safe: Standards for Child Protection.  Details the basic standards for all organisations working or in contact with children across the world.

  • Tool 2 – Keeping Children Safe: How to Implement the Standards. Provides guidance and activities to help you and your organisation meet those standards.

  • Tool 3 – Keeping Children Safe: Training for Child Protection. A pack of flexible training exercises and materials to help you and your organisation train the staff to meet the standards.

  • Tool 4 – A DVD that accompanies Tool 3 to support and help with training.

  • A CD Rom with additional material for you to amend and adapt.
