All Join In

A SEAL resource for foundation and key stage 1 teachers

Front cover of All Join In All Join In is produced by the NSPCC and  Triangle

What is All Join In?

All Join In is a resource pack for foundation and key stage 1 teachers to support key parts of the social and emotional aspects of learning (SEAL). It provides great classroom material by looking at new experiences and relationships through a child's eyes.

The pack includes a video/DVD, and a teacher's guide with SEAL activity ideas. Both formats contain British Sign Language (BSL) signed and unsigned versions of the film. Teachers can also use the extension exercises available on this website.

Child-centred

All Join In focuses on a group of three to seven-year-olds, and is almost entirely free of adults.

Children will enjoy watching Kai, Amelia, Ronnie and their friends as they learn ways to express their emotions and understand how others are feeling.

The film is easy to understand, and designed to be watched in five 10-minute segments. The children who narrate it rewind the action to reinforce the key learning points.

How does All Join In support SEAL?

The film and teacher's guide work together to provide structured learning. The group in the film demonstrate:

  • Self-awareness
Children watch themselves on playback, to see how it looks when they react to the world around them.

  • Managing feelings
They share their likes, dislikes, and feelings about their families.

  • Motivation
Structured tasks enable children to work together.

  • Empathy
Children help each other overcome feelings of nervousness and embarrassment.

  • Social skills
Children from different backgrounds and with different abilities learn ways to communicate with each other, including 20 basic BSL signs about play, friendship and feelings.

Extended learning

The teacher's guide builds on learning from the film by suggesting a range of activity and discussion ideas with clear links to SEAL themes. Most exercises relate directly to the film, encouraging children to watch, learn, and make ideas relevant to themselves.

Our extension exercises  also provide a range of great games and exercises so the class can join in and learn from each other. Ideas include making group pictures, sharing photographs, and role-playing.
