Who is this course for?

Everyone whose work brings them into contact with children or with parents. This includes employees and volunteers.

The course also provides valuable opportunities to support individuals to develop skills, gain underpinning knowledge and understanding to meet the evidence requirements of individual units for the OCR Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce.

What level is the course and do I need any specific skills?

This is a beginner course and you need no specific child protection skills.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • identify what is meant by safeguarding and child abuse

  • name the categories of child abuse and neglect and recognise the signs and indicators of each

  • identify the relevant legislation and guidance that provides the framework for safeguarding young people

  • know how to respond to concerns about the safety and welfare of a child/young person using their organisations’child protection policy and procedures

  • identify barriers to children and adults reporting concerns.

How will I be taught?

Through face-to-face learning from experienced professionals.

A range of methods will be used to help to build up skills and knowledge and there will be opportunities to think about attitudes. Methods include formal input, large and small group discussions, working with case scenarios and use of DVD materials.

What course could I take next?

Those who have specific responsibilities for child protection in their organisation would find it helpful to attend a designated persons training course:

Within universal and statutory services (i.e. Education, Health, Early Years, etc) child protection training has a mandatory refresher period of  two years for  Lead/Designated officers and three years for other staff. The NSPCC also offers a child protection update course

Many other settings adopt the 3-yearly refresher training requirement to ensure their knowledge and skills are consistent with partner agencies, as recommended in government guidance Working together to safeguard children (2010, chapter 4). .

We're also able to develop or modify a course specifically to meet your needs. If you can't find what you're looking for, please contact NSPCC training
