What is the course about?

Children and young people living with special educational needs and/or disability (SEND) are more likely to be the subject of bullying. This can have detrimental effects on their health and welfare.

As of 2012 OFSTED will be inspecting how organisations prevent and respond to bullying.

This course will enable you and your staff to develop awareness of bullying and its impact on children living with SEND.  It will enable you to develop effective interventions for children who bully or are bullied.

Who is this course for?

Professionals in the education sector and for those working with children and young people living with SEND in residential settings.

What level is the course and do I need any specific skills?

You should already have received basic awareness training in child protection.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • identify what is meant by the terms bullying, special educational needs and disability

  • describe how and why children with special educational needs and disability (SEND) are more vulnerable to being bullied

  • identify legislation and guidance that is relevant to bullying, SEN and disability

  • recognise the impacts of bullying on children living with SEND

  • identify situations where potential bullying may take place and describe ways to prevent bullying behaviour

  • state how to respond to children living with SEND who are bullied or are bullying using your own organisation's policy and procedures

  • list strategies and effective interventions for children living with SEND who are bullied or who are bullying.

How will I be taught?

Through face-to-face learning from experienced professionals. A range of methods will be used to help to build up skills and knowledge and there will be opportunities to think about attitudes.

Methods include formal input, large and small group discussions, working with case scenarios and use of DVD materials. This will also incorporate blended approaches with the use of technologies.

Methods will be interactive and involve time for reflective practice.
