What is the course about?

This will help you and your front line managers to create and sustain an effective supervisory framework which ensures safe, child-centred delivery of safeguarding activities.

Who is this course for?

Professionals who have line management responsibilities for those practitioners whose work brings them into contact with children and families.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • identify the purpose of supervision, with particular reference to safeguarding work

  • explain the different models of supervision and their relationship to practice and safeguarding outcomes

  • identify both practitioner and manager skills within a competency framework

  • apply principles of adult learning to your own supervision practice

  • practice supervisory skills and evaluate your own performance in order to apply your learning to real life situations

  • recognise some of the unhealthy processes in supervision which may result in dangerous practice.

What level is the course and do I need any specific skills?

This is a professional development course designed for those who have some previous child protection training.

How will I be taught?

Through face-to-face learning by experienced professionals over two modules. The first module focuses on building skills and knowledge using a wide range of methods including direct formal input, small and large group exercises and discussions, and DVD-supported learning.

The second module provides the opportunity to enhance skills in staff supervision through use of supported practice sessions and feedback.

When I’ve finished, what course  do you suggest next?

Those line managers who also have specific responsibility for safeguarding/child protection within their organisation may benefit from attending designated person training.

Those who also support others' practice development through the provision of training may benefit from the course: Training for trainers in child protection.

It is important for supervisors to update their child protection  knowledge. The NSPCC offers a child protection update training course.
