What is the course about?

Using the most up to date research, the course explores the subject of child neglect with a view to carrying out effective multi-agency assessments and interventions with neglected children and neglectful families.

Who is this course for?

Everyone whose work brings them into direct contact with children and families where neglect may be a concern.

What level is the course and do I need any specific skills?

This is a specialist course designed for child care professionals and practitioners.

By the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • identify the signs and indicators of neglect

  • recognise how values and beliefs may influence working with neglect

  • outline current legislation and guidance governing a multi-agency response to neglect

  • apply contemporary research and theoretical approaches on neglect to the assessment of children and families

  • identify a range of tools that will aid in the assessment of children and families where neglect is a primary concern

  • describe the impact of neglect on children’s development and on their capacity to achieve the five outcomes described in Every Child Matters

  • recognise the potential barriers to effective engagement with families where neglect is a concern

  • develop strategies for working in a multi-agency context to achieve positive outcomes for children and families

  • identify models of good practice for early intervention to prevent long term harm to children living with neglectful carers

  • recognise the impact of working in this field and develop strategies for personal and professional support.
 

How is the course taught?

This is a face-to-face course taught by experienced professionals. It offers a range of methods to help participants develop both skills and knowledge. These include direct formal input, small and large group discussions and exercises and case study material.
