What is the course about?

This course will enable you to identify those areas of your organisation where safeguarding needs should be addressed. It will help you create a structure that will encourage greater safety for children and young people.

Who is this course for?

People working within voluntary, charitable, community and commercial organisations that provide services or activities for children and young people and/or their families. They should be responsible for the development, review or oversight of policies and procedures for safeguarding children and young people in their organisation.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • identify the factors that can create vulnerabilities for children and for organisations

  • understand how your organisation can develop a standards-based approach to safeguarding. This will include developing child protection policies and procedures, safer recruitment and vetting, a code of practice for behaviour, equality and inclusion, and monitoring and evaluation

  • build confidence in using the standards for the purposes of self-assessment and action planning

  • identify relevant tools and resources to support the development of a safer organisation.

What level is the course and do I need any specific skills?

Applicants for this course should already have received basic awareness training in child protection.

How will I be taught?

Through direct presentation of key information, group exercises and discussions. There will also be opportunities to reflect on your current practices, policies and procedures and put together an action plan for increasing safeguarding effectiveness within your organisation.

When I’ve finished, what course do you suggest next?

You may wish to attend training that would extend your knowledge and skills in specific areas such as child neglect or domestic violence.

If you have specific responsibility for safeguarding within your organisation then the Designated Safeguarding Officer course would afford you the opportunity to enhance skills and knowledge in relation to all aspects of this role.

As designated safeguarding officers are expected to update their knowledge of child protection guidance, legislation and processes you may wish to consider attending our update training every two years.
