This course will enable you to become familiar with the role and responsibilities of the designated safeguarding children officer and develop competence and confidence in carrying out this role.

Those who have operational responsibility for receiving concerns about the safety and welfare of children and young people, who make decisions about what action needs to be taken, contacting and liaising with other agencies involved in safeguarding children, especially children's social care.
You may have strategic responsibilities in addition to the operational role.
This course does not provide full training for those who work in a statutory agency.
Health professionals: this course provides training equal to Level 2 - the minimum level required for clinical staff who have some degree of contact with children and young people and/or parents/carers. Designated staff in schools and colleges should apply for the course Designated senior person for safeguarding children training (schools and colleges) .
This course does not provide training for trainers, this is available as a separate course: Training for trainers in child protection .
If your role is primarily strategic, or your organisation needs guidance in setting up its response to safeguarding children, you may find that the course on Creating safer organisations more closely meets your needs.
You should already have received basic awareness training in child protection .
Through face-to-face learning from experienced professionals.
A range of methods will be used to help to build up skills and knowledge and there will be opportunities to think about attitudes. Methods include formal input, large and small group discussions, working with case scenarios and use of DVD materials.
