What is the course about?

This course is designed to enable practitioners working with children and young people and survivors of child sexual abuse to develop awareness and understanding of child sexual abuse, its impact, and to develop skills in responding effectively through the use of active listening and creative approaches.

Who is this course for?

Those who are working directly with children and young people in a range of settings for example family centres, youth centres, and children in the looked after system.

What level is the course and do I need any specific skills?

This course is at an introductory level. A basic understanding of child development and child protection awareness would be beneficial.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • understand the possible impact of child sexual abuse

  • demonstrate a range of active listening and communication skills

  • describe possible inhibitors to listening and responding

  • apply child development and attachment theories to planning interventions

  • develop a range of models and techniques in listening and responding to children and young people

  • gain understanding of a range of strategies for self care.

How will I be taught?

Through face to face learning by experienced professionals. A range of methods will be used to help to develop your skills and knowledge including presentation and discussion, small group exercises and whole group discussion to consolidate knowledge.

There will also be opportunities to work in small groups to develop skills in communication using a range of creative mediums.
