Choosing your kit

“The best place to buy your running gear is from a specialist running retailer.  You don’t need to blow the budget but you do need kit to keep you warm, dry, help you stay injury free, and make you feel comfortable and confident.”

Running is great in that requires minimal gear, however it is very important to get clothing that fits and performs well.  Judge the conditions outside and dress appropriately.  Layer up with moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics, although don’t overdress as you’ll warm up quickly. 

What you need to get started:

  • A good pair of correctly fitting running shoes
  • A lightweight, breathable t-shirt (not cotton)
  • A long-sleeved, breathable layer for winter
  • A waterproof, breathable running jacket
  • Comfortable shorts/leggings/tracksuit bottoms
  • Gloves (for those chilly winds!)
  • Sports socks

Choosing your running shoes

As with all products, you get what you pay for, however you don’t need to buy the most expensive pair for them to do a brilliant job. 

Fitting

Shoes should not be too tight or roomy around the heel or the toes.  Do not be afraid to try on lots of pairs before making a final decision.

Biomechanical factors

Getting a pair of shoes with the right characteristics will reduce your risk of injury and help to correct some biomechanical faults you may have. 

Take a pair of your old shoes to a reputable specialist running retailer. To point you towards the right pair of shoes they may:

  • Look at your feet
  • Look at these to see how your trainers have worn, on the sole and upper
  • Ask you questions about any current or previous injuries
  • Ask you about your training
  • Watch you run

Multiple pairs

It is a good idea to have different trainers for different runs (e.g. trail shoes, supportive road runners).  If you discover a brand and model that particularly suits you, you could buy two pairs of the same type of shoe.
