Preparing for race day
Liz says…
“You will have prepared for your race for many weeks - don’t jeopardize the result you want by getting things wrong in the final week. A few simple points will help your race day go to plan so that you can chill out and enjoy your running!”
As the race draws closer it’s common for runners to get a little flustered and ask themselves ‘have I done enough training, am I fit enough, can I do it’?
It’s natural and normal to be nervous, but use this to fuel and inspire your run. Spend your final few days focusing on the things you can change and not the things you can’t!
Top last minute tips for race day success
- Tapering off -You can only do too much in the week before the race. You will not get fitter or lose any fitness, so don’t test yourself out!
- Relaxing - Don’t fill your days before the race with extra jobs and added pressures. Try and keep some space for downtime and to relax.
- Planning - Don’t leave your accommodation and travel plans until the last minute, and read your race instructions in advance. It’ll help you stay relaxed come race day.
- Packing your kit - Lay everything out the night before and double check before you pack. Attach your running number to your vest and timing chip to your shoe, ready to go!
- Eating well - Fuel up! Eat a high carbohydrate meal the day before your run. Don’t try anything new or fancy, and stick to your usual routine.
- Reaching the start line - Give yourself plenty of time and arrive at least 90 minutes before the start time. Things take more time than you think.
- Staying positive and confident - Wish others around you good luck, smile and appreciate the moment in which you find yourself. When it gets hard, be courageous and remember your reason for running.
- Running your own race - Run at a consistent pace. Try not to speed up and slow down erratically. Break the race up into manageable and achievable chunks.
