Our celebrity ambassadors

England rugby hero Jonny Wilkinson was appointed the second ambassador for the NSPCC on Children's Day 2004.

The sporting superstar, who plays fly half for the British Lions, England and Newcastle, kicked off his new role with a visit to the NSPCC's team in Brighton Grove, Newcastle, to meet some of the children and staff we work with. Since then, he has undertaken a number of project visits, supported key NSPCC public awareness campaigns including being the lead spokesperson in calls for a reduction in child deaths. Jonny has also raised substantial funds for our work. He created an innovative raffle with one of his corporate sponsors, Boots, to raffle the rugby shirt he wore when helping England win the Rugby World Cup in 2003.

Jonny Wilkinson said:

"I support the NSPCC because of the work they do to help children who have suffered terrible abuse and harm. I had a very happy childhood and I believe a loving and happy childhood is a good foundation for a successful and fulfilled life.

"It is a real tragedy that there are many children whose lives are torn apart by abuse and cruelty. I believe that we all have a responsibility to do all we can to help children."
