I am:

Become a ChildLine counsellor

Our counsellors play a key role in helping to advise and support young people with whatever worries they may have.

ChildLine asks a lot of their counsellors but the rewards are great. You will be well-trained, well-supported and equipped with a range of skills that can be useful in other areas of your life.

What’s involved?

Answering a child’s cry for help can be rewarding and fulfilling. You’ll be there at a difficult time for a child and helping them find an answer to their problems.

You will need to commit a significant amount of your time to helping young people with their problems on our phone and online services.

To become a volunteer ChildLine counsellor you’ll go through:

  • a three to four month application process (involving a references and criminal record check)
  • a minimum of 50 hours of training, delivered in a series of weekday evening sessions, or over a number of weekends
  • a minimum of 40 counselling shifts every year, each lasting a minimum of four hours.

Once trained you will be expected to :

  • commit to a specific regular shift
  • attend around 15 additional hours of training and supervision over the year to keep your counselling skills up-to-date.
