ChildLine - 2008 and beyond

Now part of the NSPCC

In 2006, almost 20 years after it was formed, ChildLine, the UK’s free 24-hour helpline service for children and young people in distress or danger, became part of the NSPCC.

Since its launch in 1986, ChildLine has saved children's lives, found refuges for children in danger on the streets, and given hope to thousands of children who believed no one else cared for them. ChildLine has now counselled well over one million children and young people.

Continuing its great work as part of the NSPCC, ChildLine campaigns on behalf of children by relaying their issues to policy-makers who can help change children's lives for the better and also providing an outreach service to schools and youth groups through its CHIPS programme .

How you can help ChildLine

Make a donation
ChildLine has championed children for more than 20 years. Last year, over half a million children and young people called ChildLine, amounting to 2.7 million calls.  Many of them have to call more than once before they get through. Over two thirds (67 per cent) of calls do get answered by our switchboards, however, of the children who then need in-depth counselling, only 40 per cent receive this service from one of our counsellors.  Thanks to generous support from government and from donors, we are in a position to start expanding the capacity of ChildLine, but this has to be a long-term commitment. In the coming years we need to raise over £50m to grow our phone, text and online helpline services for adults and children so that we can help even more children and young people.

We would love to have your help in making sure that every child who calls, receives the necessary care they need.  A gift of only £3 will help us answer one more call, and a gift of £32 enables us to give in-depth counselling to one more child.
