The Great British Duck Race took place on the River Thames on 5 September 2009, with a record breaking 205,000 plastic ducks taking to water. Around £12,000 was raised for the NSPCC through optional donations made by the public when ‘adopting’ ducks to race.
The ducks were released in the water at Molesey Lock, near Hampton Court Palace for the third annual duck race, beating last year’s number of ducks by 30,000.
It took around three hours for the first duck to cross the finish line at Albany Reach in the one kilometre race, and they passed Hampton Court Palace as they went .
£10,000 in prize money was up for grabs for the person who adopted the first duck across the finish line. The number of the winning ticket is: 023871 and, the lucky winner is yet to come forward.
Community fundraising manager for London, Danny Crabb, said: “It was a great day. Over 3000 people turned up to help cheer on the ducks at the starting line, and enjoyed face painting, bouncy castles and a Name the Duck competition.”
