Date of event: 04 October 2007
This year the NSPCC's unique and exciting City Conker Cup will take place simultaneously at two venues in London, as a North versus South of the river challenge. The North of the River challenge will take place at the Great Eastern Hotel in Liverpool Street and South of the River at Vinopolis, Borough Market. The winners of both, North and South, will compete against each other for the final trophy.
This year we expect to exceed our Guinness Book of Records record for the greatest number of simultaneous conker matches played at any one time.
In the past, the City Conker Cup has raised much needed funds for the NSPCC including an impressive £40,000 last year. Sadly, children are still dying from abuse in this country and others are regularly emotionally and physically abused. The NSPCC plays a significant part in trying to remedy this situation but we must continue to raise sufficient funds for our valuable work.
The event is sponsored by Taylors Port. The first prize is an all-expenses-paid trip for the winning team of three to the Port Festival in Oporto. There are other valuable prizes for runners up. Those 'old hands' who have attended before will no doubt want to come again, and will be joined by plenty of new challengers.
Those great stalwarts to English rugby, Josh Lewsey and Jason Leonard, played last year's inaugural match and this year we will again have some serious sporting heroes to start us off.
A gold entry fee for a team of three cost £295 and silver £195. There will be the opportunity to wonder at (and drink from) the white port 'luge' ice sculpture, play in various conker competitions and enjoy plenty of beer and port together with delicious food and other refreshments.
As a must-attend event, please ensure you add the date in your diary now so that you don't get double-booked against your other conker-playing commitments.
