A big thank you to all the walkers, volunteers and supporters who took part in HACK 2008 (Hike Against Cruelty to Kids), set in the picturesque locales of the Southern Pennines and the Peak District on 30 August 2008.
The day went extremely well.
The dedicated NSPCC volunteers had a 5am roll call at the Bay Horse Public House to set up for walkers' registration at 6am. It wasn’t long before the keenest walkers started arriving, taking full advantage of the coffee, tea and bacon sandwiches supplied by the pub.
The climate was perfect for walking, not too warm, and remaining dry throughout - thankfully the unpredictable British Summer weather held out!
The Holmfirth Police, Woodhead Mountain Rescue and Thongsbridge Army Cadets were on hand to help support the walkers, as well as Eventmedics First Aid and our rota of over 75 wonderful volunteers, who ensured all the walkers were safe and looked after at every stage of the day.
Ice Valley Spring Water ensured that all thirsts were quenched with their kind donation of 5,000 bottles of water. At the finish line there was a BBQ, refreshments and a bar, kindly supported by the Huddersfield Sailing Club.
The first walker completed the challenge in an amazing 6hrs 52 mins, with the last walkers taking 12 hrs 35 mins.
It was a truly enjoyable and emotional day, knowing that 352 people were willing to walk 25 miles to support the NSPCC. A fabulous time was had by all, reflected by some of the comments below:
“Good walk. Well organised. Really enjoyed it”
Margaret
“Fantastic scenery, brilliant marshall support and checkpoint refreshments. Thanks.”
