The NSPCC is the first UK charity to develop a fundraising application to run within the popular social networking site, Facebook.
Facebook has dominated newspapers and dinner table conversations for the past few months and if you haven’t yet heard of it (or been poked, received a flower, cast a spell or become a pirate), you must be living on another planet.
It’s a social network site, which means it’s a place where you can connect with your friends and colleagues in one place. You can post messages, pictures and connect with (long lost and distant) friends. Basically it’s an alternative to your address book. You can write on a friend’s ‘wall’ or send private messages or give virtual ‘gifts’. You can even “poke” your friends (similar to a cyber nudge).
Already totalling a record-breaking 31 million users worldwide and 900 000 plus members in the London network alone, the opportunities to connect with NSPCC supporters, are incredible.
“We believe this space will allow us to do some interesting work with our supporters and engage with them in this new and exciting way”, says Lianne Byrne-Hammacott, project manager in the eFundraising team. “We have supporters all over the country and Facebook is ideal for showcasing events within the regions and help volunteer fundraisers and supporters interact with each other and manage their events in a central place.”
Once the application is loaded into your Facebook profile, you can:
You can also see how your actions are helping towards ending child cruelty. All actions are displayed - whether you donated, entered events, set up your own events and what those donation and fundraising totals (via JustGiving) are.
The fantastic viral abilities of Facebook make it an essential tool for recruiting new supporters. Once you load the application, or enter an event, all your friends connected to you know about it. It encourages them to download it too and get involved. We certainly encourage you to share it with your friends.
If you have a Facebook profile already, we encourage you to load the application. It's really easy to setup. If you don’t have a Facebook profile (yet), it’s simple and quick to set up. Go to www.facebook.com and follow the instructions.
We want to spread the message as far as possible that by downloading the application, you are helping to end child cruelty. So get downloading!
