What we have achieved
Thanks to the generosity and backing of supporters, the NSPCC has almost doubled our activities to end cruelty to children since the launch of the FULL STOP Appeal in 1999.
This has enabled us to be someone to turn to for children and young people, protecting them when at risk and helping them to overcome the effects of abuse.
Preventing abuse
To end cruelty to children we need everyone - individuals, families and the wider community to take action.
We campaign to raise awareness of child abuse, and we lobby policymakers who can make a difference the children's lives.
- 400,000 copies of Your Family distributed six times a year - offering practical parenting advice and support
- 38 Family support projects offering families help and advice
- 13,911 newly registered users on for There4me.com, the NSPCC's website service for young people
- 750,000 wristbands sold reminding wearers of the NSPCC's Child Protection Helpline number
- 145,000 Partners in Campaigning sent 145,000 postcards to MPs, government ministers and the Prime Minister, helping make the law and social policy more effective in protecting children from abuse
- We contributed to the creation of a new Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) to tackle child abuse on the internet through strength of voice
Protecting children from abuse
Protecting children is everyone's responsibility.
We work with local, national and international organisations whose work brings them into contact with children as well as with Government and the public to ensure our message is spread as widely as possible.
- The NSPCC sits on 60% of Local Safeguarding Children Boards allowing us to influence organisations represented on them and making them more effective at preventing abuse
- 145,270 calls were made to the Helpline in 2005
- We run 8 young people's centres - giving young people a voice and with counsellors on hand if young people need to talk about their problems
- Our Specialist Investigation service (SIS) and the police worked on 333 cases of complex child abuse in 2005/06
- Almost 100,000 professionals have been trained in how to spot the signs of abuse and take action
- We have made sport safe for children through establishing the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU)
Helping children overcome abuse
Our teams help children and their families overcome the damaging psychological and emotional effects of abuse.
- 177 community-based services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands who last year helped more than 12,000 children
- Our 34 therapeutic centres helped 2,021 children come to terms with the damaging emotional harm caused by abuse
- 7 teams help prepare children and young people for giving evidence in court - an experience often as frightening as the abuse itself
