Safety tips

Familiarise yourself with the sites your children are using
This will help you understand your child’s habits and whether they understand the issues associated with using the service.

Your child should understand the importance of protecting their privacy online
Many, if not all, of the key social networking sites provide privacy tools to ensure users can manage who they choose to interact with.

Your child should be careful about who they add to their 'friends list'
They should think carefully about adding a stranger to their “friends list” even if another friend has recommended them. Remember, people are not always who they claim to be.

Photos and descriptions on their profile should be suitable
They should not be adding anything that is provocative. Check with your child regarding the content they are posting.

They must know to seek your agreement before meeting with a stranger
Tell your child to think very carefully before agreeing to meet with strangers they have met online, even if they have been interacting for some time.

Talk to your child about online bullying and the importance of acting responsibly
Discuss what is ok and what is not ok, both in terms of their own and others’ behaviour. Let them know about ChildLine - our 24-hour, free and confidential helpline for children in distress or danger.

Report concerns of a sexual nature to CEOP
If you suspect that your child, or any other child, is in contact with someone with a sexual interest in children, it is important to report it to CEOP, with any evidence you may have. Visit www.chatdanger.com for more information.
