Creating a culture of safety

NSPCC EduCare child protection awareness programme

Creating a culture of safetyWritten by the NSPCC, this programme is designed for those who come into contact with children through their work or voluntary activities. It will prove invaluable for anyone working with children in an organisational setting as well as those who need to understand more about the issues surrounding child sexual abuse.

It contains facts about child sexual abuse and those who may pose a sexual threat to children. The programme also provides guidance on how you can create a culture of safety for children within your organisation. It provides practical steps that your organisation can take to promote vigilance amongst staff members. It also contains pointers to good practice in the recruitment and vetting of new staff.

The delivery is flexible and the programme is available in both paper-based and online formats. It comprises three  modules of key information. Each module has its own questionnaire to test understanding. Upon successful completion a certificate will be awarded. All participants also receive individual feedback on their answers.

Module one - An introduction to sexual abuse

Learn what constitutes sexual abuse, examine why sexual abuse occurs, who abuses, and some of the methods abusers typically adopt. Eliminate misunderstanding by learning about some of the common myths and facts surrounding child sexual abuse.

Module two - The effects of child abuse

Understand how children are damaged by sexual abuse and how they can be silenced by their abusers. Identify some of the typical situations that can encourage the problem and examine some of the methods by which people can infiltrate organisations. Learn about the risks poses by use of the Internet. Also looks at how sex offenders can receive treatment.

Module three - Combating child sexual abuse

Help identify the steps necessary to create a culture of safety within your organisation and learn how to make infiltration by a determined abuser difficult.

This programme is designed to follow on from other Educare general awareness programmes: Keeping children safe or Child protection awareness
