NSPCC comment on Vetting and Barring Scheme

Press Releases - 14 December 2009

NSPCC spokeswoman Diana Sutton said: "The NSPCC welcomes Sir Roger Singleton's common sense approach.  This should help allay parents' confusion about the Vetting and Barring Scheme.

"The requirement for organisations and formal groups to check and vet adults who are able to build a trusting relationship with children is an important child protection measure.

"The NSPCC welcomes the clarification that private arrangements between parents and friends remain outside of the scheme and that other important measures remain within the scheme.

"We believe the adjustments to the scheme offer a balanced response to the risks to children and provide a reasonable way forward.

"However, we must remember that vetting and barring is not a catch-all and is only one aspect of safe recruitment for people to work with children."
