Dreams come true
23 July 2009
Two of the NSPCC young celebrity supporters have become world champions within days of each other.
On Tuesday 21 July 2009, 15 year old diver Tom Daley won 10m individual platform to win Britain's first every World Championship gold. And on Saturday 18 July 2009, 22 year old boxer and NSPCC ambassador Amir Khan became a world champion when he won WBA light welterweight title.
Tom has been a supporter of the NSPCC and its service ChildLine since 2007 across a range of activities and said in 2008 about ChildLine:
“When things get tough, you may feel that nobody understands. But you don’t have to be sad and suffer in silence. There is always someone who will listen to your problems and help you. Sometimes, when you’re feeling down and lonely it is hard to believe that your dreams will come true – but they can”.
Boxing sensation and world champion Amir Khan has supported the NSPCC since 2004.
As NSPCC ambassador, he raises funds for us as well as awareness. He works closely with our schools teams to help children understand what abuse is, encourage them to talk about abuse and ensure they know where to turn to if they need help.
Amir Khan said: “It is an honour to be appointed an NSPCC ambassador and it is a role I will take very seriously. I am lucky that I have always had friends and family around me, encouraging me to follow my dreams - some children just dream of a life free from abuse and cruelty. I hope my appointment will encourage more children to have confidence to speak out and believe in themselves.”
