How we are helping children in the South West

Deborah Meaden with a ChildLine counsellor

Join Deborah Meaden in her support of the South West Child's Voice Appeal so we can answer every cry for help.

Thank you to all our supporters who have helped us reach £600,000 as of January 2010.

Please donate here and help us to reach our £1.6 million target and ensure that every cry for help from the South West is heard.

You may wish to donate £42, and allow a child to receive a confidential, one-to-one telephone counselling session. £180 could pay for a trained practitioner to deliver one day of support through the NSPCC adult helpline, to protect the most vulnerable of society, babies and toddlers who cannot make the calls themselves. £1600 will pay for the recruitment and training of a volunteer counsellor.

On Christmas day 2009 1,918 children called ChildLine. Of these children 1,016 were passed to a counsellor, but only 493 of them made it through. Too many children are going unheard.

Recent figures show the shocking number of calls we are receiving from areas within the south west. These figures relate to calls made via a landline which accounts for 24% of calls received to ChildLine as 76% are either from mobile phones or are untraceable.

From Exeter and surrounding areas we received 13922 calls, 8621 from Bristol, 4219 from Gloucester, 4505 from Plymouth and 7730 from Salisbury.

The South West element of the Child's Voice Appeal will create a one stop shop for children by bringing together ChildLine, online counselling and text services at the NSPCC’s centre in the south west.

The NSPCC's Helpline for adults with concerns about a child’s welfare will also be expanded and promoted in all areas as part of the Appeal nationally.

If you would like to get involved with the Child's Voice Appeal in the South West please e-mail us or call free on 0844 892 0562.

What difference can you make?

Corporate Fundraiser

The local business community in Exeter have recently formed a new business group to support the Child's Voice Appeal in the South West. They have set up a £1600 challenge inviting other businesses to help fund volunteer counsellors for ChildLine. It is brilliant to have this local support.

The Child’s Voice Appeal will raise £1.6 million over three years to expand ChildLine South West, the UK’s smallest ChildLine base. Last year, South West base counsellors spoke with 2,529 young callers about everything from feeling suicidal to family break-ups. Our south west counsellors now respond online and to texts thanks to the development made possible by the appeal so far.

Why donate?

Our helplines are a lifeline for many vulnerable children. We need your help to ensure we are there to support all children when they need someone to turn to.
