I am:

Lee Mitchell

Head of schools service

What do you do?

I am the service head for our new developing schools service, which has the ambitious goal to ensure every primary school child in the UK and the Channel Islands has an understanding of abuse in all its forms, including bullying, and is able to recognise the signs of abuse. We also want to make sure children know how to protect themselves and are aware of the help available to them, including support from ChildLine. This is a very exciting and challenging opportunity to turn strategy into practice.

Why did you join the NSPCC?

I came from the local authority and the private sector. I joined May 2003, as I wanted to be involved in the safeguarding of children from a national perspective during a significant time of change (after the Victoria Climbie Inquiry). In addition, I wanted to join a well respected charity with a clear vision and purpose.

What benefits are there?

It's a good working environment, and a values-driven organisation. There are diverse opportunities to expand your managment experience and move out of your management "comfort zone" as well, allowing you to face new and exciting challenges.

What do you find rewarding?

Working with the people here. I also enjoy the ability to influence at a local and national level to really make a difference to children's lives, and to be involved in the strategic development and direction of the organisation.

What values are important for working with the NSPCC?

Commitment; openess to challenge and change; believing you can make a difference; and believing that safeguarding children is everyone's responsibilty.
