Alan Shearer donates testimonial money to the NSPCC

NSPCC Ambassador and football icon Alan Shearer donated a total £405,000 to the NSPCC. The money was raised from the proceeds of the testimonial events held to honour his 10 years as a Newcastle United player culminating in a testimonial match at St James’ Park against Celtic. Alan said:

“The easy part was deciding to give it to charity. The difficult part was deciding which charities to give it to. I’ve said a lot of thank-yous, but the main one has to go to all the people who have paid their money. They’re the ones who’ve made this happen and I’m delighted so many people will benefit.

I was lucky enough to live my dream. I played football, got paid an unbelievable amount of money to do it, so for me to take the money wouldn’t have been right. It was an easy decision to give it to the charities.”

The NSPCC was one of 14 charities to benefit from the total £1.64 million generated. A spokesperson for the NSPCC said:

" We are delighted to receive this fantastic amount, which will help the NSPCC carry out the vital work it undertakes with vulnerable children in the North East. Alan has shown great commitment and enthusiasm to our mission to end child cruelty and his role as a NSPCC Ambassador in general."

Other charities that benefited from Shearer’s generosity were:
Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy; NSPCC; St Cuthbert’s Care; Newcastle General Hospital A & E; Freeman Hospital; Royal Victoria Infirmary children’s services; Wilm’s Tumour (Institute of Cancer Research); Little Hearts Matter; Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research; Samaritan’s Purse; Cramlington Juniors FC; Wallsend Boys Club; Friedreich’s Ataxia Research; Gosforth High School.
