Sheree Murphy helps launch NSPCC Centre in Liverpool

Actress and NSPCC supporter Sheree Murphy attended the opening of the Hargreaves Centre, a new, revolutionary NSPCC centre in Liverpool in June 2007. The Hargreaves Centre will give abused children a new beacon of hope.

Sheree said

“This is a wonderful appeal and a real opportunity for the people of Liverpool to make a difference to stop child abuse.  The work that will be carried out in the new centre will make so much difference to the lives of vulnerable children.”

Sheree attended with local school children as well as John Hargreaves, Chairman of Matalan Plc and Esther Rantzen, NSPCC trustee and President of ChildLine.  The Hargreaves Centre – designed in the shape of a welcoming ‘hug’ after consultation with young people - is named after John Hargreaves who launched the Safe Place Appeal in 2004 with a £6 million donation.  The appeal aims to fund a vital service for vulnerable children and young people in Merseyside who need help and protection from all forms of abuse. The target is to raise £17 million to cover the cost of the building and all NSPCC services in Merseyside for a ten year period.

The centre, which is the largest NSPCC base outside London, houses:

• A team to help local children, young people and their families overcome domestic violence

• A groundbreaking service working with pregnant substance users and women and families with young children

• A ChildLine base where volunteer telephone counsellors help and comfort young people in distress and danger from the Liverpool area and beyond

• A There4me.com team, providing online information, advice and support for young people through the NSPCC’s website for 12 to 16-year-olds
