The Hargreaves Centre has been designed around the idea of a ‘hug’. Children and young people who have used the services felt that this most represented what they felt the new building was about – a safe place and haven for the children and young people of Liverpool who have suffered abuse.
Alex Leith, assistant director said: “When the architects first began designing the building, they asked us what we wanted. We gave them a wish-list of everything we needed – and we got everything that was on it.”
One side of the building is for children, young people and their families, while the other side has offices and conference rooms. 
The design means children and families accessing the Centre’s services will have their own area, without having to cross the paths of professionals and strangers. A light and spacious lobby leads to counselling rooms, a sensory room for children and parents to relax in, wet and dry playrooms, and a secret garden hidden in the heart of the building.
The building houses NSPCC services including child protection teams that aim to protect children suffering from domestic violence, and help women who are substance users to care for their children.
Listening services, There4me.com and Liverpool’s first ChildLine base will also be housed in the building.
